Shah Rukh Khan’s latest hit film Don 2 has broken the record for 2011′s top-grossing Bollywood film in North America after a mere 11 days in theaters. Released by Reliance Big Entertainment, the Farhan Akhtar-directed action thriller has grossed a stunning $ 3.3 million through January 2 surpassing the $ 3.1 million of previous record-holder Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starring Hrithik Roshan and Akhtar, as well as the $ 2.5 million of Khan’s own Ra. One which was released during Diwali. Don 2 has already grossed more than Salman Khan’s 2011 hits Bodyguard and Ready – combined.
The Berlin-set Don 2 also set a new record for the all-time biggest opening week for a Hindi film in North America collecting a stellar $ 2.64 million beating the $ 2.55 million that Shah Rukh’s My Name is Khan earned in its first seven days in February 2010.
Don 2 is the sequel to the hit 2006 Don: The Chase Begins Again and along with Shah Rukh Khan Priyanka Chopra and Boman Irani also reprise their roles. In this story: having conquered the Asian underworld, Don (Shah Rukh Khan) now has his sights set on European domination. In his way are the bosses of the existing European underworld and all law enforcement agencies. The action shifts from Kuala Lumpur to Berlin as Don must avoid assassination or arrest, whichever comes first, in order for his plan to succeed.
The film is still going strong and continues to play to large crowds in over 160 theaters across the U.S. and Canada and in fact is till playing to packed houses in India and the world over.
